Grandma's ingredient preferences were: Gold Medal flour, Imperial margarine, corn oil, regular Crisco.
Second choices were: Pillsbury flour, Fleischmann's margarine, followed by Promise margarine.

Grandma's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients
. 2 eggs
1/2 cup shortening (margarine)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup dark brown sugar (packed)
1/2 teaspoon water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2-1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1-2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions
Cream eggs, shortening, sugars, vanilla, and water until fluffy. 
Combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix into batter. Add chocolate chips. 

Drop spoonfuls of dough on baking sheet, leaving room for cookies to spread. 

Bake at 375 degrees; 10-15 minutes, until the edges of the cookies are dark.  Cool on rack.

Grandma's Pecan Cookies

Ingredients
. 1/2 pound butter (not margarine)
4 tablespoons powdered sugar
2 cups flour
2 cups broken pecans
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 tablespoon water

Directions
Sift flour, then measure. Cream the sugar and butter. Add the flour, vanilla, water, and nuts. Form into shape of dates, crease, and place on ungreased cookie sheet. and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. While still hot, roll in granulated sugar.

Grandma's Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookies

Ingredients
. 4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 stick butter
1 stick margarine
1-3/4 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 tablespoons sour cream

Directions
Mix flour and salt.  Cream butter, oleo, sugar, eggs, vanilla and almond extract.  Dissolve baking soda in cream.  Add dry ingredients alternately with cream mixture to butter mixture.  Chill dough in refrigerator. 

Roll 1/8 thick and cut with a floured 2-1/2 inch round cutter.  Sprinkle with additional sugar and bake on ungreased baking sheets in pre-heated 400 degree oven about 7 minutes.  

Store in covered container.  Makes about 7 dozen.

Grandma's Brazil Nut Cookies

Ingredients
. 1 pound shortening (Crisco)
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 tablespoon molasses
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 pound coconut
1 pound chopped Brazil nuts
4-1/2 cups flour

Directions
Melt shortening slowly, add sugar, beaten eggs, molasses, salt, soda an vanilla.  Add flour. Let stand in a cold place for one hour. Roll like a sausage. Let stand in refrigerator over night. Slice into thin rounds bake at 350.

Grandma's Coconut Macaroons

Ingredients
. 2 egg whites
dash salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup granulated sugar
one 3.5 ounce can flaked coconut (1-1/3 cups)

Directions
Beat egg whites with dash of salt and vanilla until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar, beating until stiff. Fold in coconut. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto greased cookie sheet. Bake in slow over (325 degrees) about 20 minutes.  Makes ~30 cookies.

Grandma's Applesauce Cake

Ingredients
. 1 package yellow cake mix with pudding
4 eggs
1/3 cup oil
1/3 cup sour cream
1 cup applesauce
1 cup chopped raisins
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions
Mix all together.  Beat 4 minutes at medium speed.  Bake in a Bundt pan at 350 degrees for 50-55 minutes.

Grandma's Apple Slice (Slab Apple)

Ingredients
. 2 sticks margarine, room temp.
2-1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 pkg. dry yeast
1/2 cup milk
2 beaten egg yolks
8-10 apples, pealed, cored, and sliced OR
      2 cans pie apples
1 cup sugar
3-4 tablespoons flour
butter
cinnamon

Directions
Put yeast and egg yolks in milk. Set aside.  
Blend flour, salt, and margarine as for pie crust.  Add milk mixture as for biscuits.  Knead slightly with hand to smooth. 
Roll 1/2 of the dough out as pie crust on a jelly roll pan.  Put the apples on top of rolled dough. Sprinkle the sugar and flour over the apples.  Dot with butter. Add cinnamon to taste.  
Roll other half of dough. Cover and seal. 
Bake 45-60 minutes, until browned, at 350 degrees. Cool. Use thin icing, if desired.

Grandma's Cherry Torte

Ingredients
. 1/2 cup butter
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 cup milk
2-1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 medium size bottle Maraschino cherries, without liquid

Directions
Mix dry and liquid ingredient separately, then combine.  Pour into a spring form. 
Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.

Grandma's Plum Cake

Ingredients
. 1 stick margarine
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
12 Italian prune plums (halved and pitted) OR
 2 medium apples (pealed, cored, and sliced)
Topping
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions
Cream the margarine, sugar and eggs. Add extracts. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Combine the two. Pour into an 8 in. x 8 in. square pan, or an 8 inch pie pan. Top with the plums or apples. Combine the sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle on top. 
Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes.

Grandma's Double-Quick Coffee Cake

Ingredients
. 3/4 cup war water (not hot)
1 pkg. dry yeast (not compressed)
1/4 cup sugar (1/2 cup if desired)
1 teaspoon salt
2-1/4 cups sifted flour

1 egg
1/4 cup soft shortening or butter
3/4 cup raisins, optional

Directions
In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in water, add sugar, salt and about 1/2 the flour. Beat well about 2 minutes. Add eggs and shortening. Beat in gradually the remaining flour until smooth. Add raisins. In a greased baking pan, drop dough by small spoonfuls. Push dough into the pan. Cover. Let stand and rise in a warm place (85 degrees) until double in bulk, about 50-60 minutes. Top with streusel or sugar topping before setting it to raise. 
Bake at 375 degrees 30-25 minutes, until brown.

Grandma's Cream Puffs

Ingredients
. 1/2 cup butter
1 cup boiling water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup flour
4 eggs

Directions
Melt butter in boiling water. Add flour and salt all at once and stir vigorously. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture forms a ball. Remove from heat.  Cool slightly. Add eggs, one at a time, beating vigorously after each addition. Drop by large tablespoonfuls onto a well-greased cookie sheet. Bake in pre-heated hot over (400 degrees) for 45-50 minutes or until olden brown and dry. Allow to cool slowly away from draft. Cut off tops with sharp knife. Fill with your favorite cream puff filling. 
Makes 8 large puffs.

Grandma's Potato Salad

Ingredients
. 9 small or 6 large potatoes
2 slices of bacon
vinegar
salt
hard-boiled egg
diced celery
chopped onion
parsley

Directions
Boil 9 small or 6 large potatoes. Do not overcook. When boiled, drain off water, cool, then peel and slice. Set aside until needed. 
Dressing
Cube 2 slices of bacon, fry, and drain off all but about 1-1/2 teaspoons of the drippings (save the poured off drippings). 
To the bacon, add approximately 1/4 cup water (according to the moisture of the potatoes)  and 2 teaspoons vinegar. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and bring to a boil. Pour over sliced potatoes. 
Add 1/4 cup diced celery and a little chopped onion. 

To garnish, add 1 sliced hard-boiled egg and some parsley.

Taste the potato salad. Add more salt, vinegar, and/or the saved drippings as needed.

Using red salad potatoes instead of regular potatoes makes a more moist salad.

Grandma's Lemon Jell-O Mold

Ingredients
. 1 large or 2 small pkgs. lemon Jell-O 1 cup diced celery
1 small can crushed pineapple, drained
1 large or 2 small carrots, grated

Directions
Stir Jell-O into 2 cups hot water until completely dissolved. Add 2 cups cold water. Stir. Let stand in refrigerator until slightly thickened. Add celery, pineapple, carrots. Pour in ring mold and let stand in refrigerator overnight.

Four Minute Frosting

Ingredients
. 1 cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 unbeaten egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 tablespoons water or flavored liquids like pineapple juice, coffee or maraschino cherry juice

Directions
Mix all ingredients in a double boiler. Have water boiling in the bottom part. Use electric beater for 4 minutes. This frosting never gets hard or sticky.

Spiced Peaches

Ingredients
. 1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon ginger
1 clove
2 cups sliced peaches

Directions
Combine water, sugar, ginger and clove in a small sauce pan. Bring to a boil and add peaches. Reduce heat and simmer until peaches are tender, about 10 minutes. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Ice Cream Pudding Dessert

Ingredients
. 60 Ritz crackers, crushed
1/2 cup melted butter
2, 3-3/4 ounce packages pistachio pudding
1-1/2 cup milk
1 quart vanilla ice cream
whipped cream or large tub of Cool Whip
1-1/2 cup milk
1 quart vanilla ice cream
whipped cream or large tub of Cool Whip

Directions
Crust: Mix Ritz crackers and melted butter.  Mix and press into a cake pan.

Filling: Mix together pistachio pudding, milk, ice cream. Put on top of crust.  Chill for 2 hours.

Topping: Use whipped cream or 1 large tub of Cool Whip and left-over Ritz crumbs.

Original Girl Scout Cookies (Sugar Cookies)

Ingredients
. 1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons milk
2 teaspoons baking powder
3 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions
In mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar. Stir in beaten eggs. Add remaining ingredients and blend well. Chill dough thoroughly.

Roll out dough on floured and sugared pastry cloth. Cut into circles about 3 inches in diameter. Place on greased baking sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees, 11-14 minutes or until lightly browned. Makes about 3-1/2 dozen cookies.
